The following are short, free form poems I wrote about 30 years ago that sought to express my thoughts – my definition of the Humanities. For me, that meant digging into the very nature of each, exploring what they are, do, and represent to us as creative creatures. They were written in first person to give each one its own voice; an opportunity for each to introduce itself and reveal the nature of its existence and the reasons by which each represents the very heart and soul of our talents and passions. Enjoy.
Art
I am the face of creativity.
I am that through which humanity recognizes itself,
The world, and the reasons for its existence.
I am the force that gives substance to the mind’s eye,
And thought, a substance beyond the ether.
I am the passion that inspires a nation,
And makes the mundane, immortal.
I am the expression through which concepts live, and timidity dies.
I am the master of time, and the progenitor of civilizations.
I am vision; I am the window beyond reality.
I am Art.
Music
I am the voice of nature.
I am the power that beguiles the spirit to divulge its innermost secrets.
Emotions live through me in a sensual dance of love and faithfulness,
Memories and regrets, passions and pain.
I am a host to the blessed, to the anguished, and the damned.
I live to inspire those who yearn for the sound of my voice,
And give hope to those who would listen so they may find peace once again.
I have no age yet carry the regrets of the past and the hopes for the future.
I am the definition of love, the dispenser of tears, and the messenger of dreams.
I am the conqueror of nothingness;
I am the guardian of the rhythm of life.
I am Music.
Dance
I am the embodiment of poetry.
I am the spirit of emotion brought to life
Beyond the walls of the imagination.
I hold the power to summon angels and demons alike
To show their true essence beyond the mystery that is their existence.
I speak without words and touch without hands.
I am the master of my vessel, yet a slave to its mortality.
I weave a tapestry of tales with movement,
Each step a singular frozen drop in time
From a world most never see or seldom realize existed.
I give to all with all I possess
Yet am nothing more than illusion beyond what I possess.
I am the frenzy of youth, and the elegance of age.
I am grace; I am power.
I am Dance.
Philosophy
I am the conscience of humanity.
I am the visionary who seeks the truth
Beyond the limitations of its mortality.
I am the seer of mysteries and the guardian of reasoning.
I am the protector of the entity who cries for shelter from the obstinacy of blind souls.
I am the voice of logic in a chorus of chaos.
I am forever, yet do not exist.
I am the mirror of justice; I am the unending question.
I am Philosophy.
Prose
I am the voice of emotion.
I am the force through which the mind reveals its humanity.
I am the conjurer of dreams,
And the alchemist through which vision becomes reality.
I give music its soul
And set forth the mind on a journey into the greater understanding
Of all that was, is, and has yet to be.
I bring forth the most intimate part of a person,
And breathe life into thoughts
For whom nations have perished and been reborn.
I possess the gift which binds the world into one entity.
I am the embodiment of language; I am the guardian of truth.
I am Prose.
